In the following chapters, I present twenty of Balyogi’s illustrations and relate them to the Nine Bodies. Although Balyogi did not present his illustrations to me in any particular order, I have organized them into four chapters, reflecting the major themes in his teachings. More than likely, you will need to return repeatedly to the descriptions of the Nine Bodies in Chapter 3 while you’re concentrating on the illustrations. You may also wish to return to the teachings on consciousness in Chapter 2. If you are to receive any depth of realization from these teachings, it’s important to be patient and persistent. They contain a lot of subtle material that you will want to explore over a long period of time.

Each of the illustrations contains a teaching about the nature of mind and consciousness. I offer guidance from my own meditation experience to help you understand the symbolic meaning of each illustration and provide instructions for using each illustration as a meditation object. Additionally, I give instructions for contemplating each of the illustrations in a direct, discursive manner. The guidance I offer, although shaped by many hours of studying the illustrations with Balyogi, had to be narrowed to serve the purpose of this book and was chosen to reflect my own insights. Thus, the guidance is not meant in any way to be the definitive statement of interpretation.
